Hiring an offshore NetSuite consultant: what to look for

Hiring an offshore NetSuite consultant? The skills to check, six questions to ask and the red flags that point to a project in trouble.

Hiring an offshore NetSuite consultant: what to look for

Hiring an offshore NetSuite consultant can give you experienced implementation and support at a lower cost than a local partner. But NetSuite projects succeed or fail on the people doing the work, so it pays to know what to look for before you sign.

Functional vs. technical NetSuite consultants

Most NetSuite work needs two kinds of skills:

  • Functional consultants understand business processes, such as Procure-to-Pay, Order-to-Cash and Record-to-Report, and configure NetSuite to match them.
  • Technical consultants build customizations: SuiteScript, workflows, integrations, Advanced PDF/HTML templates and EFT payment files.

A strong offshore team has both, so your requirements are designed by someone who understands accounting and built by someone who can code.

What an offshore NetSuite team can handle

  • New NetSuite implementations, from requirements to go-live
  • Process customization: forms, workflows and approvals
  • Saved searches, workbooks and custom financial reports
  • Transaction templates and Advanced PDF layouts
  • SuiteScript development and third-party integrations
  • Multi-subsidiary setups and tax configuration, including SuiteTax
  • Ongoing admin support, user training and optimization

Our NetSuite consulting page explains how we approach each of these, from implementation to support after go-live.

Questions to ask before you hire

  1. How many NetSuite projects has the team delivered, and in which industries?
  2. Who will be on my project, and what are their functional and technical skills?
  3. How do you handle requirements, testing and sign-off?
  4. How much overlap will we have with US business hours?
  5. Who owns the scripts and configurations once the project is paid for?
  6. What does post-go-live support look like, and how is it priced?

Red flags to watch for

  • No one on the team understands accounting, only the software.
  • Vague estimates with no written scope or deliverables.
  • Customizations with no documentation or knowledge transfer.
  • A single person covering both design and development on a large project.

If you already work with a partner and recognize some of these signs, start with an account review. We look at your scripts, workflows, saved searches and roles, then recommend a clear plan. Request a NetSuite health check.

Why accounting knowledge matters

NetSuite is an accounting system first. Consultants who understand the general ledger, reconciliations and month-end close configure it so your financial data reflects how your business really runs. That avoids expensive rework later.

Common questions about offshore NetSuite consultants

Can an offshore NetSuite consultant take over from our current partner?

Yes. The handover starts with a review of the account: scripts, workflows, saved searches, roles and any integrations. Ask your current partner for whatever documentation exists. A good team tells you what it found before it changes anything.

How do time zones work with an offshore NetSuite team?

Agree a daily overlap window for calls and questions. Data loads, script fixes and testing can run while your office is closed, so the results are waiting for you in the morning.

Do we need both a functional and a technical consultant?

For an implementation or a rescue, usually yes. For small changes, one consultant with both skills can be enough. Either way, ask who checks the other person's work.
